editTips and Tricks
Below are 10 tips and tricks on how to write inventive science fiction.
-
Once you have an idea for a story, start questioning why things are like that in the story.
-
Ensure consistency throughout the story – if laws are established for the world, ensure they are followed throughout the story.
-
While the world is a key part of a science fiction story, it is also important to create unique and compelling characters.
-
The characters should be the driving force behind the progression of the plot – do not trade a good plot for a grandiose world.
-
The world should not be the reason for the story – the characters should be the focus, with the world acting as a setting that helps them to grow.
-
When creating a world, it is important to consider the history of that world, especially when the world is futuristic compared to our current world.
-
Keep in mind that as technology develops, cultures tend to change as well – consider the cultural changes/advancements in the world.
- When writing, consider the fictional world as a “historical simulation” – a could-have-been or a could-be if some things of our world were different.
-
Try and come up with new and unique props – don’t let the story become “just another sci-fi book”; come up with new inventions and/or ways of doing things.
-
Don’t try and explain the science if there isn’t a need to.
